Will Devonport strike tomorrow?
By LocalPeep | Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 13:45
Tomorrow (30 November) is set to have the biggest day of strike action the UK has seen in more than thirty years. Trade Union members from UNISON, GMB, UNITE, NAHT, NASUWT have recently been balloted over strike action in response to proposed changes to public sector pensions, and over 2 million people are expected to take part in the walk out tomorrow.
Several areas will be affected including job centres, council services, the Highways Agency, government offices, and driving test centres. Border control employees are also planning to take part in the action, and Heathrow has cancelled some of it's flights in anticipation of long queues at passport control. Some Police Community Support Officers are also expected to strike, and as many as two thirds of all schools could close for the day.
Over 140 of the 364 schools in Devon will be affected, including many schools in our area. Staff from the University of Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art, and City College Plymouth are also taking part in the walk out.
