The

Friends of Devonport Park have won an award of £44,881 in the latest Participatory

Budgetary event run by DRC Partnership. This money allocated to them will allow

the Friends of Devonport Park to establish the foundations and base for the

bandstand.

The

base has been designed by Research+Design who recently won a prestigious Alan

King 2009 award for their New Street Project design in the Barbican, Plymouth.

The base is going to be constructed in Plymouth limestone and be designed to eventually

accommodate the main bandstand to be built on top. The Director of

Research+Design Robert Bedner told devonportpeople that, “The base will be

constructed close to the traditional design which was voted for by the public

consultation held in September, which is similar to the original bandstand

built in the 1900’s in Devonport Park”.

Students

who have recently graduated from the Plymouth College of Art and other students

on work placements have also assisted Robert at Research+Design in the planning

of the designs. Serena Scrine who runs the Spatial Design Degree course at the Plymouth College of Art told devonportpeople that, “the students have been very keen and excited to

work on this project with Research+Design, it was a good opportunity for them.”

The

next step for the Friends of Devonport Park is to get the base in place and

raise the rest of the required funding. Frank Wilson from the Friends of

Devonport Park said that, “The base is a project in its own right and will give

us a community events space in the park which will be fully functional by the

summer of 2010.

There

will also be an exhibition of the design’s of the bandstand from the students at

Plymouth College of Art to be arranged sometime in December 2009. Keep a look

out for further information on this on the Friends of Devonport Park website.

The

Friends of Devonport Park still need to raise the funds for the rest of the

bandstand to be built which is about £165,000. If any one knows a way they can

be of help or if they would like to donate money to the bandstand project

please visit the Friends of Devonport Park website or call Mike Gallagher on

01752 213308.

I think this will be fantastic when it's done. It will be a great place for music and other events; bringing people from all over Devonport and the rest of Plymouth together. What good is feeding our bodies if we don't also feed our souls?

If they're happily handing over those sums of money, why don't they come and build a lovely extension onto the side of my house? A house-sized extension on the side of my house will do nicely, thankyouverymuchly.

I know - over £44,000 spent and thats just for the base! It's a nice idea but even with this wopping amount it wont even be close to being built! They still need another £165,00!! Surely there are far better ways to spend this kind of money in Devonport

This seems like a ridiculous waste of money to be honest. £165,000 for a pet project? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That money could feed hundreds, if not a couple of thousand, people and probably house them too. Why aren't initiatives like looking after the homeless shouted about?
