A father-of-nine from North Prospect has been laid to rest by family and friends at an emotional funeral service.

Fernley 'Dusty' Miller died earlier this month aged 82 after his mobility scooter collided with a car at a pedestrian crossing.

His family, including 34 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, paid tribute to a "great character" who was looking forward to becoming a great-great-grandfather for the first time.

A procession of silver funeral cars carrying floral tributes led the way at a touching service at Weston Mill Crematorium.

Mr Miller's family, including children Kevin, Raymond, Christine, Denise, Peter, Jeanie, Carolyn, Deborah and Paul, planned to scatter their father's ashes on the grave of their mum Jean, who passed away in 1985.

The couple also brought up grandson Andrew, and Mr Miller was being cared for by fellow grandchildren Gemma and Jeanie for the five years before his death.

The former scaffolder was born in the city and had lived in Greatlands Crescent, North Prospect, for more than 50 years, after moving from St Levan Road.

He worked for the city council and became a well-known car park attendant in the city centre, eventually giving up the job due to back problems.

Mr Miller's family spoke of a kind, enterprising man who would collect bits and pieces from Weston Mill recycling centre and turn them into fully-functional valve TV sets.

He loved train sets, tinkering with motorbikes and boats and always gave to the Salvation Army, who came to the family's aid after an industrial accident.

They share fond memories of Mr Miller sleeping in his woolly hat, which he claimed prevented headaches, and the dummy cigarettes hung from the corner of his mouth after he gave up smoking. The pensioner was on his way to buy fresh crab at Sutton Harbour on Wednesday, July 8 when the accident happened.

At about 1.40pm his mobility scooter collided with a silver BMW on the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Sutton Road and Exeter Street.

Although Mr Miller suffered a head wound and a cracked rib, his injuries were not thought to be serious – so it was a devastating shock to his large and loving family when he died suddenly at Derriford Hospital less than two days later. A post-mortem examination revealed he died of natural causes.
