Mount Wise Historic Park

Devonport Park is not the only park in Devonport! The grassy hill over looking Richmond walk and Plymouth Sound with a view of Mount Edgcumbe, Cornwall across the water, is also an historic park in Devonport. The grassy slopes became a park in 1893 for Devonport after being leased from the war department for use as a public park.
The memorial of Captain Scott on top of the park was erected shortly after WWI. Captain Scott was a local boy; born and raised in Stoke Damerel, near Devonport, Plymouth in 1868. The statue commemorates his expedition to the South Pole in 1912.
Recently the millennium tower has been erected on the very top of the hill to symbolise the importance that the military and defence of the Royal Dockyard has always played in the area. The tower is situated within an octagonal section that was a gun battery and one of the main fortifications on top of the hill in 1778-9.
