St Aubyns Church in Devonport, soon to be the new location for a community library.
The new library will be situated at the bottom floor of St Aubyns Church and a new mezzanine floor is being built for a separate worship area. A church may seem like an unusual place to open a library, but it will give this well-loved historic building new life as a spacious and inspirational place for local people young and old to read, access information, and enjoy reading-related activities. Sue Bonnin, the library’s outreach worker, says it will give Devonport residents the library they deserve, whilst preserving an important local landmark
The library will have extended opening hours, including a couple of evenings a week. Fourteen computers in a new computer suite, originally there were only three computers. A children’s section and a much larger selection of books, C.D’s and DVD’s to borrow. There will even be an exhibition space for performances and workshops. The new library will also be the first in Plymouth to have a self-service facility for borrowing and returning books.
Reverend David Nixon of St Aubyns Church says that the church has a very small congregation and they feel very positive about the changes made to the Church as they feel it brings the Church closer to the community while still retaining their own space for worship.
Sue Bonnin has been appointed to help Devonport residents with any queries and encourage people to contribute any ideas they may have on the new library. Call Sue on 01752 305925 or e-mail sue.bonnin@plymouth.gov.uk

As with the other improvements to Devonport of late, this too will be an asset. A creative use of an unused building.
