Devonport
warriors are doing a project called Kick Start which has been set up for 17 to
24 year olds from the Devonport New Deals for Communities NDC catchment area.
The Kick Start project will help kid’s works towards an RFU level One Coaching
Award and an entry level FRU Referees’ course.
Devonport
warriors which changed its name from Westcountry Warriors in February of this
year after forging a relationship with DRC Partnership to promote the long
history of the Plymouth Albion Rugby Club based in Devonport. The DRC
Partnership chose and paid for the new uniforms for the Devonport Warriors to
represent this community history.
The
idea of the Kick Start programme means that Plymouth Albion’s Development Team,
Devonport Warriors will be working with local Primary and secondary schools to
encourage participation in the game and to promote a healthy lifestyle in the
Devonport community.
Kids
in Devonport will get the opportunity to work with some of the Plymouth Albions
professional players. At the end of the year they will actually play a game of
Rugby at Brickfields Sport Centre! The Devonport Warriors will also be doing
rugby camps and tournaments during school holidays.
Chris
Perkins, Plymouth Albion’s coordinator said, “There will be 3 teams with 36
players altogether, boys and girls who will have the opportunity to work
towards an RFU Level one coaching award and an entry level referees course and
their will even be help in finding jobs if they need to.” This is great for
older kids who are really serious about a career in sports of all kinds and
making a real change in their lives.
Everyone who is between 17 and 21 years old is
welcome to join this new youth group, boys and girls. On Saturday 19th
December the launch of the Kick start Programme begins with a Kick start day
starting with watching the Devonport Warriors play. Contact Albion’s
coordinator Chris Perkins on 01288 356054
